How Do Heat Pumps Work?
Heat pumps are devices that transfer heat from one location to another, using various methods to provide heating, cooling, or both.
The four main types of heat pumps are:
- Air-source heat pumps: In heating mode, an air-source heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it inside the building. In cooling mode, the process is reversed, and the heat pump extracts heat from the indoor air and releases it outside.
- Ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps: Ground-source heat pumps exchange heat with the ground rather than the air. The temperature below ground remains relatively constant throughout the year, making geothermal heat pumps highly efficient.
- Water-source heat pumps: These heat pumps extract or release heat to a body of water, such as a lake, river, or even a man-made well.
- Hybrid heat pumps: Combining a heat pump with a traditional fossil fuel heating system (like a gas furnace), these systems automatically switch between the heat pump and the furnace to provide the most energy-efficient and cost-effective heating.
While the exact function of a heat pump will vary between types, they all use some kind of heat exchange technology to move hot air where it’s needed.
